Colombian coffee: the Andean all-rounder, region by region
Grown by hundreds of thousands of smallholders across the Andes, Colombian coffee is the clean, balanced all-rounder of specialty — washed, sweet and dependable. Here's what to expect in the cup, region by region, and where to find it.
Colombia is one of the most recognisable names in coffee — and for good reason. It's the world's biggest grower of washed arabica, almost all of it produced by hundreds of thousands of smallholder families across the Andes. If you want a clean, sweet, dependable cup, Colombian coffee is the all-rounder that rarely lets you down.
Where it's grown
Coffee grows the length of Colombia's three Andean mountain ranges, from Nariño and Cauca in the south, through Huila and Tolima, up to Antioquia and the famous Coffee Axis (Quindío, Risaralda, Caldas). High altitudes and rich volcanic soils give the beans density and sweetness, and because regions harvest at different times, fresh Colombian coffee is available for much of the year.
How it tastes
Most Colombian coffee is washed, which gives it a clean, transparent cup: caramel and brown-sugar sweetness, a medium body, and a juicy acidity that runs from red apple and stone fruit to brighter citrus at higher altitudes. It's balanced rather than wild — easy to drink black and forgiving across filter and espresso. A growing number of producers now offer naturals and honeys too, which add more fruit and weight.
Varieties and what to look for
You'll see classic varieties like Typica, Bourbon and Caturra alongside Colombia's own rust-resistant breeds, Castillo and Colombia, which keep farms productive without giving up much in the cup. A named region (say Huila or Nariño), a single farm, or a specific variety on the bag usually points to a more carefully selected lot — a good sign for flavour.
Below are current Colombian coffees from our catalogue, plus washed lots, the Caturra variety and strong value picks. Everything is priced per 100g so you can compare like for like.
